Kia ora Lumsden School Community

The school has been busy with lots of special opportunities for our students this week. Today Harold and the Life Education Van are here offering learning about emotional well-being. Peer Mediators

Room 1 has been undergoing Peer Mediation training. The Year 6 students will be available in the playground from next week to support students with solving disagreements peacefully. The duty teacher will still handle anything serious and will also support the mediators with their roles.


What Are The Benefits of Cool Schools Peer Mediation?

  • Helps individuals develop life-long conflict management skills

  • Focuses on building positive relationships with others

  • Creates win/win situations for students, teachers, parents, caregivers and the wider community

  • Provides life skills for school, home and the workplace

  • Empowers students to help other students

  • Is proactive, helping to prevent bullying and other levels of conflict

  • Provides a better learning environment

  • Fosters the development of self-esteem and leadership skills

  • Enhances both inter-personal and intra-personal communication skills

The Cool Schools Programme develops key skills such as:

  • Active listening

  • Using “I” statements and affirmations

  • Recognising different types of responses to conflict

  • Effective questioning

  • The role of the mediator

  • The mediation process (including a process for junior students)

Rugby Fun

Thanks to Josh Bolger who spent Tuesday lunchtime at school running an optional rugby coaching session with students.

Netball Coaching

Amanda Thwaites and Amy Priest ran netball skills sessions with all students on Wednesday afternoon. If you are interested in playing for a team this coming season, please take note of the trial dates at the bottom of our newsletter.

Swimming - Three More Weeks of Packing Swimming Togs

I want to apologise for the confusion with swimming. I mistakenly thought the pool closed at the start of March but it won’t close until the start of April. We will be swimming on Wednesday 16, 23 and 30 March. Please contact us if you can help supervise at the pool.

Red Day for HeartKids

Next Friday we are asking students to wear something red if they can. It is a National Fundraising Day for HeartKids NZ. We will be accepting donations and having some RED-ICULOUS fun in the playground. HeartKIds 18 March

  • Gifting of fundraising $$ to Board to be spent on school furniture and library shelving

  • Purchasing new equipment – Tables for outside painting

  • Cheese rolls - Fundraiser

We still need a go to person for the Bike Park, someone to help organise bike repairs and general bike park upkeep.

Afternoon - Evening Vaccination Clinic - Lumsden Memorial Hall 12 April

Boosters for adults and vaccinations for children 5 years and over.

Families can book into the same time slot.

Walk-ins are welcome - may need to wait as booked times will be looked after first.

Fuels for Schools

This sponsorship programme has helped put over $1.4 million of resources into more than 400 rural schools in the last fourteen years. It's very simple. Customers can nominate a participating school to receive 50 cents for every 100L of bulk fuel they have delivered. So as we keep your wheels turning you are giving back to your local community too. Once a participating school reaches their $1,000 target / goal they can redeem from the variety of technology, sports or literature packages on offer. It’s just that simple. The more people involved andnominating a school the sooner they will be rewarded. Register here

 

Mossburn Netball Club - TRIAL DATES CHANGES for 2022

Due to Central pushing back the start of the season we have decided to push everything back 2 weeks to line up with that. So new dates are below:

Adults - Thursday 24 March, 7pm

Adults/Year 10-13 - Tuesday 29 March, 7pm

Year 1-6 Thursday 31 March, 4-5pm

Year 7-13 Thursday 31 March, 5-6pm.

 

Mid Northern Southland Toy Library Fundraiser

The Mid Northern Southland To Library are fundraising to help with their operating costs. Catering items like baking paper, foil, cling wrap and other items such as snap lock bags and bin liners are available. Please order using the google doc. Orders and payment by the end of March for an April delivery. Email mnstoylibrary@gmail.com once you have ordered, or if you have any questions.
